The end of year 2008 is nearing, we can now look back on what we have achieved. The outcomes are both positive and encouraging, but it's certainly nothing compared to what is coming up in 2009.

Just before the Holidays, here is Dotclear 2.1.4. This version fixes a security problem and brings some new enhancements. We naturally recommend this update to all users.

French ISP Free.fr, providing Internet, TV and telephone access to more than 3.350.000 French households, is now offering a completely free blog service entirely supported by Dotclear. Presently in test phase, this service will be available for everyone, be they customers of the ISP or not.
Free.fr has been providing a no-cost web hosting service known as “pages perso” for several years now, and if installing Dotclear 1 on this platform was not always easy, things changed after the release of Dotclear 2.0 this summer as Yohan, “pages perso” manager, decided to offer PostgreSQL along with MySQL, making it very easy for people with blogs running on Dotclear 1 to migrate to Dotclear 2. Free.fr made other moves to make using Dotclear on “pages perso” smoother and finally decided to offer Dotclear blogs.
A few mails and discussions later, the result is on blog.free.fr. So far the feedback is excellent. One of our French user reported that setting up a Dotclear blog of Free.fr platform barely took 20 seconds. The platform offers the most recent themes and Yohan should add specific enhancements to the platform in the near future. On the technical side, Free.fr blog platforms runs with only one installation of Dotclear, taking full advantage of the multi-blog functionality of the engine.
We are very excited that Dotclear was chosen to run this no-cost, add-free platform, and we think it's a great opportunity for people who wish to start a blog but don't like the technical aspects of installing and managing their own blog application.

Dotclear 2.1.3 is available for download. This version fixes the problem found in the automatic update process and adds some more attributes and template tags.
The process had a serious problem as it was only possible to update your Dotclear version once. Not very useful, we agree.
So the update system was partially reviewed to fix the problem, and improved in the process.
Unfortunately, you can't update your 2.1 or 2.1.1 version with the new system as it contains the previous one. I tried to find a way for you to enjoy the new system, but it was much more complicated to implement it (for you) than to simply update your blog using the traditional method. So you'll have to wait for 2.1.4 (or 2.2) to try it.
The new update system will also allow those interested to update to the intermediate versions (nightly, beta, RC...). We will tell you more about this when the time comes.
We added some more tags and attributes for your templates:
A few bugs were fixed too, including the insertion of an incomplete HTML code for videos in Internet Explorer 7.
Finally, a minor XSS breach was fixed. The breach happened at a time when the user was not connected and would have required to click on a bad link. We still recommend you update to 2.1.3, of course :)

Dotclear 2.1 RC1 is available for testers and adventurers. Many new features are coming up, a lot of enhancements for theme creators, and much more.
Except in case of natural disaster or something, Dotclear 2.1 will be released on November 1st as scheduled. We'll then have the opportunity to describe you this new version in more details. In the meantime, here is a non-restrictive list of the new features:
You are invited to test this version and report issues you might encounter. It is a test version, there is no automatic installation and you should not use it for production. Although, this version will be automatically updated when Dotclear 2.1 final is released (as will be all nightly builds).
You will find Dotclear 2.1 RC1 with the other nightly builds.
Thanks for reading and see you in a few days :)

A brand new plugin now lets you browse and install available themes and plugins from DotAddict directly from your Dotclear interface.
This is just fantastic and I can never thank Tomtom and Pep enough for their efforts on this plugin. And I have reasons to believe it's only the beginning and that this plugin could bring more marvels soon.
Some of you may wonder how deep it can be integrated in to Dotclear. Don't worry, this is more or less what they are working on, but probably not before version 2.2 as 2.1 is about to bring something quite as fantastic :)

Many Dotclear 1.2 users didn't dare to upgrade to Dotclear 2 during its beta cycle, and some of them switched to another blog engine to try something new. They often chose Wordpress, which is not surprising considering that Dotclear and Wordpress have many features in common.
