The extended meaning also covers the feed itself or the feed reader. The other similar feed format is RSS. Dotclear offers both formats for you to choose from. ==== Aggregator ==== Software designed to read the syndication feeds of blogs and websites. Also called feed reader or news reader. ===== C ===== ==== CSS ==== Acronym for Cascading Style Sheets. Language used to define the presentation rules of a web page such as layout, colors, text styles, etc. CSS also designates the document containing the rules (i.e. "change this or that in your css"). ===== D ===== ==== Database ==== Data storage space. Provided by your hosting provider, the database is located on a specific server and you can usually access it via a dedicated Web interface. See Database. ===== E ===== ==== EXIF ==== Exchangeable Image File Format. Metadata format used by digital camera manufacturers. For each photo, the digital camera saves information such as aperture, sensitivity, brand, model, etc. and includes them in the image file EXIF on Wikipedia. See also XMP ===== F ===== ==== FTP ==== Acronym for File Transfer Protocol. Most traditional web hosting provider make an FTP server available allowing users to add files to their web space. An FTP client is a software you use to upload files or to retrieve them from your web space. And if someone ask you "if you have this or that on your ftp", they actually want to know whether this or that is available on your web space which can be accessed via the associated FTP server. ===== I ===== ==== IPTC ==== International Press Telecommunications Council. IT standard for storing press picture metadata, and used by many photo management softwares. IPTC on Wikipedia. One of JavaScript's advantages on other languages such as PHP is that it's run on your computer by your browser, wich makes it quite fast. ===== P ===== ==== PHP ==== Recursive acronym for PHP : Hypertext Preprocessor. Programming language used to generate the pages of the blog. You web hosting provider usually provides you with the environment required to run PHP scripts or programs. Dotclear is entirely developed in PHP. When you display a page of a Dotclear weblog, the page is created by Dotclear's PHP scripts run on the webserver corresponding to the URL you have typed. ===== R ===== ==== RSS ==== Really Simple Syndication : XML-based document format designed for syndication feeds. It generally hosts several programms that are called services and that serve different purposes. For example, you may install a web service (to mange web sites) and an FTP service (to upload files) on the same server. ===== T ===== ==== Table ==== In a database, data are spread in several tables (16 when you first install Doclear) depending on their type. Each table is made of lines, columns and cells, just like a spreadsheet. Their names all start with a common prefix (dc_ by default). For example, entries are stored in a table called dc_post, tags in dc_tag, etc. ===== W ===== ==== WYSIWYG ==== What You See Is What You Get. This acronym means that what appears on your screen looks like the result you will get. ===== X ===== ==== XHTML ==== Acronym for eXtensible HyperText Markup Language. XML-base markup language used to write webpages. This language is a stricter version of HTML. I is used by Dotclear to display blog pages. The markup defines the structure of a document (paragraph, list, level 2 header, emphasis…) ==== XML ==== Extensible Markup Language. Generic markup language indicating the structure and the hierarchy of a document. ==== XMP ==== Extensible Metadata Platform.
